Kid Rock, Foreigner, Packway Handle Band

When: Sat., July 11, 6:45 p.m. 2015

Kid Rock appears to be on a mission to become America’s small-town hero: His First Kiss: Cheap Date tour, currently working its way through America’s sheds and pavilions, offers $20 tickets, charitable donations and an opening set from jukebox heroes Foreigner. And the song for which it’s named, the title track and lead single from his tenth record, is a rock ode to main-street nostalgia, where young lovers pull into drive-ins, pal around in pickup trucks and share drinks from Styrofoam cups. But there’s one problem for Rock in his bid—his long-time embrace of the Confederate flag, which has led to recent protests of and speeches about the singer in his beloved Detroit. One Michigan reverend even called him “the hometown hero who is a zero with the Confederate flag,” a counterproductive indictment for Rock’s current aim. As First Kiss winds deeper into the South, will he at last rightly denounce it? —Grayson Haver Currin
