Kevin Smith | Goodnights Comedy Club | Stage | Indy Week

Kevin Smith

When: Sat., July 8, 7:30 & 10 p.m. and Sun., July 9, 7 & 9:15 p.m. 2017

Let's not be coy: Kevin Smith's star as a filmmaker has fallen since he led a pack of low-budget indie auteurs with 1994's Clerks, followed by Mallrats and Chasing Amy. These days, his movies tend toward the fringe of the mainstream, like Zack and Miri Make a Porno, or toward passion projects like Tusk. You might reasonably argue that he never made a movie after 2000 that wasn't for fans only, though 2011's Red State is a solid horror flick about scary religious fundamentalists. But Smith, who has branched out into media from comics to podcasts, remains a household name, not just as a nineties nostalgia object but also as a modern geek ombudsman. On stage and on the Internet, he's known for epic, conversational Q and A sessions in which he engages his fans with humor, energy, and an unfaked passion for pop culture. Expect his four shows at Goodnights this week to mix comedy, confession, opinion, and anecdote as only Smith can. —Brian Howe
