Kevin James

When: Wed., June 5, 7:30 p.m. 2013

Being one of Adam Sandler's buddies has its advantages. Just ask Kevin James. For a minute there, it seemed like the hefty comedian would permanently be known as that roly-poly guy who was married to that hot, loud chick on that CBS sitcom that was on, like, forever. After The King of Queens went off the air, James' pal Sandler roped him into his Happy Madison Productions comedy mafia. The two eventually teamed up in the gay-marriage farce (in every sense of the word) I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and the all-star summer romp Grown Ups. James also produced and starred in the shockingly successful, Sandler-approved vehicles Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Zookeeper. Both films consisted of James shamelessly doing pratfalls and other physical gags, reminding us how gleefully sadistic audiences can be when it comes to comedies starring a fat guy. This may explain why his most recent film, last year's Here Comes the Boom, wasn't as popular: A slimmed-down James tried to keep his dignity intact while taking comic body blows as a high school teacher who becomes an MMA fighter to raise money for his school's music program. He teams with Sandler again in Grown Ups 2, slated for release in July.—Craig D. Lindsey
