Katy Perry, Robyn

When: Tue., June 14, 7:30 p.m. 2011

When it comes to addictive trashy pop, you could probably do far worse than California dreamer Katy Perry. That begrudgingly conceded, doing unbelievably better couldn't be easier for those headed to this show thanks to the blessed label whiz who booked international pop star Robyn to open. This Swedish powerhouse first made a splash in the states with radio friendly hits "Show Me Love" and "Do You Know (What it Takes)" in 1998. At just 16, her early success was a feat, but record-label control proved ultimately stifling. Robyn has spent the last 12 years distancing herself from the mindless pop of her early days with the creation of her own label, Konichiwa Records, while honing a tech-minded, dance-oriented, dub-influenced sound. Already four albums deep by the start of 2010, Robyn took things to a new level with the Body Talk trilogy. The three-part release featured guest spots with Diplo, Snoop Dogg and Röyksopp, plus a wealth of tracks with longtime collaborator Klas Åhlund. The tracks hit a captivating sweet spot of catchy hooks, fearless arrangements and heartfelt lyrics. Robyn runs this thing like a Dancehall Queen. —Ashley Melzer
