KARMA TO BURN

THE POUR HOUSE, RALEIGH

TUESDAY, JAN. 20

As a bunch of grown folks extol the merits of sticky weed as if bongwater were synonymous with holy water, stoner rock can be an easy form to tease. From their late-'90s start, Karma to Burn avoided the risk by not singing about burning one; in fact, with a few exceptions, the West Virginia trio doesn't sing at all. On last year's very good Arch Stanton, Karma to Burn's third LP after a long hiatus, they rally around brawny, refined riffs. At times, they march with a militaristic combination of precision and strength; other times, they sound like an innocent surf-rock crew that's stumbled into a den of weed iniquity and elected to stay. They never relent long enough for you to wish that a hook, hoarsely howled, arrives. Sierra, from Ontario, opens. 9 p.m., $8–$10, 224 S. Blount St., Raleigh, 919-821-1120, www.the-pour-house.com. —Grayson Haver Currin
