Despite my near-total ignorance of all sporting activities, even I know Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is pretty much one of the greatest basketball players to ever live. How could I not? As co-pilot Roger Murdock in Airplane!, he gave a snot-nosed little kid who'd seen through his character the real deal on defense and how he supposedly didn't run down the court. ("The hell I don't!") Furthermore, he dueled with Bruce Lee in Game of Death and inexplicably reviewed Lena Dunham's Girls for the Huffington Post earlier this year. Damn, that is a man.
Now he's written a children's sports book (with Raymond Obstfeld) called Streetball Crew Book One: Sasquatch in the Paint. Sadly, it is about a science geek who hits a growth spurt and is recruited to play basketball, and not a novel about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar battling Sasquatch. I'd be so all over that.
Abdul-Jabbar isn't reading at this event; he's signing copies of his books, but we're told he will not sign memorabilia. So I'll have to leave my Airplane! DVD at home. Man! —Zack Smith
