Kala Ambrose

When: Thu., Oct. 27, 7 p.m. 2011

When you get a little older and start to realize the bogeyman doesn't live in your wardrobe closet and nightmares will neither blanche your hair nor bring Freddie back to life, sure you can breathe a little easier at Halloween ... but something inside says, "Where's the fear?" Aside from credit card bills, there's not a whole lot to be scared of in our current age of reason. Ghosthunting North Carolina, the newest book by award-winning author Kala Ambrose, solves the problem of finding spooks, supplying not only stories but also maps and guides to Blackbeard's Atlantic burial ground, Piedmont Civil War ghosts still wandering former battlefields and the haunted towns of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ambrose reads from the book at 7 p.m., and visits Flyleaf Books Friday at 7 p.m. —Christina Cass
