K Flay, Gentleman Contender

When: Mon., March 4, 9 p.m. 2013

What do the words "Bad-whoa-dude is like butt-rock" mean to you? Yeah, me neither. Still, in the thick of hip-hop's recent authenticity wars over both Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" and the "Harlem Shake" phenomena, throwing a white, suburban female rapper named K.Flay in the mix is bound to get you even more flummoxed over who's phony and who ain't. After all, the person responsible for the aforementioned quote is a Stanford-educated emcee who's as far removed from hip-hop's traditional core as Jagerbomb. As rapping capabilities go, she's worlds ahead of her parody-stricken counterparts Kreayshawn, Kitty Pryde and the Karmin women. K. Flay's grunge-rap has a home in hip-hop. Judging from her remixed response song to Danny Brown's "Party All the Time," where she plays the self-aware, three-sheets-in party gal, she fits right in. —Eric Tullis
