Justin Townes Earle, Tift Merritt

When: Thu., Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m. 2012

I'd put the careers of these two against most any other roots performers to emerge fresh-faced in the past decade. Justin Townes Earle and Tift Merritt both demonstrate real sympathy for country traditions and an uncanny ability to avoid the retro tourism afflicting most of their peers. They're also fine lyricists who know how to capture a mood, whether that's Earle assaying the quiet desperation of a couple's wordless meeting at the midnight picture show or Merritt describing the revelatory "Feeling of Beauty" in a dark world. Earle's new album indulges a Memphis bent; meanwhile, Merritt has been on a hot streak after some career hiccups, as she seems to have found a perfect partner in producer Tucker Martine. Traveling Alone feels particularly vibrant while balancing Merritt's varied interests in Laurel Canyon folk, country, Brill Building pop and Memphis soul. This fine $20 double-bill starts at 8:30 p.m. —Chris Parker

Price: $20-23
