Jupiter Ascending: An IMAX 3D Experience

Rated PG-13 127 min. 2014

All the digital effects in the universe can't save this cosmic turkey from the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix). A Chicago house cleaner (Mila Kunis) discovers she's intergalactic royalty. Her bodyguard/love interest (Channing Tatum), a lycanthropic alien with pointy ears, uses his space rollerblades (really) to jet around many frantic combat scenes. Other alien species—including Eddie Redmayne as the purring villain—are distinguished by random facial prostheses, like Star Trek circa 1968. Most of the budget seems to have been poured into elaborate set and costume design, and there's some funkiness to be enjoyed there. But the story is warmed-over space opera, the CGI space battles are visually incoherent, and the dialogue is ridiculous. Concerning hyperspace travel, a character is warned: "Portaling can be a little rough on the royal bowels." That goes for the whole movie.
