Joyce Yang, piano

When: Sat., Jan. 19, 8 p.m. 2013

Fans of tickled ivories face a tough choice Saturday night. In her first visit to Duke Performances, Korean pianist Joyce Yang presents something like two recitals. The 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition silver medalist opens with the elegant arc of Beethoven's "Piano Sonata No. 18," two Chopin nocturnes and Bartok's industrial ode "Out of Doors." Yang lightens after halftime with Earl Wild's spirited transcriptions of songs by Rachmaninov and Gershwin. She performs at 8 p.m. at Reynolds Industries Theater in Duke's Bryan Center. Tickets are $30 ($10 for Duke students)

Simultaneously, Carolina Performing Arts welcomes Romanian master pianist Radu Lupu for a Romantic program that sandwiches Franck's windswept "Prelude, Choral and Fugue" between works by Schubert. Lupu, who sits on an office chair instead of a piano bench, will send you into the night air squeezing the hand of your companion and humming the warm themes of Schubert's "Sonata No. 21." —Chris Vitiello

Price: $30
