Jonathan Byrd (Back Room)

When: Fri., Jan. 16, 8 p.m. 2015

Jonathan Byrd’s voice is an even-tempered instrument, capable of delivering his songs with the sort of steadfast baritone that suggests he’s a veteran news anchor with a dignified Southern accent. That impression holds for his songs, too, though he’s more of a Charles Osgood than a Brian Williams, prone to slip into poignant memoir mode after delivering the unflinching truth. Last year’s You Can’t Outrun the Radio represented the best of the Chapel Hill singer-songwriter, as he sang about the unenviable plight of the offshore worker and the town drunk one moment and spoke tenderly of love and loss the next. Byrd balances honky-tonk zest with folk and spiritual interests, a mix that gives his broadcasts both variety and verve. —Grayson Haver Currin
