John Murry, The DuPont Brothers

When: Mon., Oct. 14, 9 p.m. 2013

From San Francisco by way of Tupelo, Miss., rock 'n' roll singer-songwriter John Murry balances influences of both those locales. There's an element of adventurous Bay Area cool—it's more than a passing detail that he's tight with Chuck Prophet—but his songs also have a conflicted emotional gravity that betrays his Southern upbringing. Last year's The Graceless Age is a promising debut, even if the U.K. press oversold it a bit with declarations such as "a masterpiece" (Uncut) and "a work of genius" (The Guardian). That said, the album's 10-minute focal point, "Little Colored Balloons"—a harrowing, soulful confessional about addiction—is impossible to deny. —Peter Blackstock
