John Mellencamp, Carlene Carter

When: Tue., March 31, 7:30 p.m. 2015

The Artist Formerly Known as John Cougar has always had to work harder for respect than his fellow heartland rockers. Yet Mellencamp’s transition from pop star to elder statesman has been deft, even textbook. After conquering the mainstream, he’s ruminated on death, done a blues album, recorded with T Bone Burnett—you know, gotten real. Yet he still has the oddball move in him, like the Southern Gothic musical he co-wrote with Stephen King a few years ago. When you’ve survived superstardom with your dignity intact and just received a lifetime record contract, you can do that. Opener Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash, went solo in the new wave ’80s before yielding to her country-music DNA. —David Klein
