Jesus Christ Superstar

When: April 11-16 2017

Hating on Andrew Lloyd Webber has long been a cottage industry in pop culture. (It's hard to say who hasn't used Cats as a one-word punch line by now, but the list of those who have include writers for SNL, The Simpsons, Glee, and The Golden Girls.) Still, his rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, was a cultural masterstroke in 1970: a contemporary and controversial reimagining of the Passion—the brief, final part of the life of Christ between his entering Jerusalem and his crucifixion—by Webber and Tim Rice, both agnostics. At first, the BBC banned the double album that preceded the live theatrical production; its subsequent musical and film versions were later censored in countries including the U.S.S.R., South Africa, and India. As Judas and Jesus, Aaron C. Finley (Kinky Boots) and Aleks Pevec (Something Rotten) anchor this North Carolina Theatre production, which closes, appropriately enough, on Easter Sunday. —Byron Woods
