Jeannette Walls

When: Wed., June 4, 7:30 p.m. 2014

In her bestselling memoir The Glass Castle (set to be adapted into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence), former gossip columnist Jeannette Walls said she prefers non-fiction to fiction. If you've read Castle, where Walls talks about growing up with her siblings and her eccentric, mentally unhinged parents in various states of squalor, you understand why she believes truth will always be stranger (and more compelling) than fiction. Nevertheless, she takes the imaginative route in her latest novel, The Silver Star, which has many of the same traits—scrappy protagonists, unstable parental figures—as Castle. Walls also appears at McIntyre's Books in Pittsboro at 6:30 on June 5. —Craig D. Lindsey
