JAWSfest: Blood Red River, Phatlynx, The Monterreys, The Evil Streaks

When: Sun., Sept. 1, 2:30 p.m. 2013

Aptly timed for hurricane season, just as surfers anticipate September swells, the annual JAWSfest celebrates Steven Spielberg's shark-horror classic (and its lesser follow-ups) with screenings of the franchise's first three entries and a four-band bill of vintage-inspired acts. Reverb-drenched surf purists The Monterreys and Phatlynx supply single-note sprints reminiscent of Dick Dale or The Tornadoes, while Durham's Blood Red River takes a more punk-informed approach to standard surf revisions. Boston's The Evil Streaks shed the surf shtick entirely, favoring rockabilly-inflected pop that suggests a secret session between the Cramps and the Go-Go's. —Bryan C. Reed
