James Valentine

When: Sat., Oct. 8, 7 p.m. 2011

James Valentine has hiked the Southern Appalachians for the last 40 years, and he can tell you a thing or two about the rich biodiversity of the region, one of the most diverse in the world. Consider this: The Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee contain more tree species than the entire continent of Europe. The Southern Appalachians might contain nearly 20,000 fungi species (only about 2,300 have been identified so far). The area boasts old-growth forests, mighty waterways and rare plants, like the Mountain Sweet Pitcher Plant with its beautiful heart-shaped hooded leaves and maroon blooms. Valentine will be on hand at 7 p.m. to discuss and sign copies of his new book, Southern Appalachian Celebration, a collection of 136 color images published by UNC Press. He'll also present a slideshow of his images. —Megan Stein
