James Dashner

When: Tue., Nov. 5, 6:30 p.m. 2013

Look, we're well aware that dystopian young adult novels are a dime a dozen, representing approximately one-third of all books published, alongside YA vampire novels and YA Gossip Girl knockoffs. But cream rises to the top, which is where you'll find James Dashner's Maze Runner series, about teens stuck in a mysterious, controlled environment surrounded by a maze with dangerous creatures, which is a lot like high school. (Interestingly, the series' prequel, The Kill Order, takes place in North Carolina.) Yes, there'll be a big-budget Maze Runner film next year to make a run at that good Twilight/Hunger Games box-office cheddar. Until then, you can get in on the ground floor with The Eye of Minds, the first book in Dashner's new young adult series, The Mortality Doctrine. Set in a near future, it deals with a teen hacker who gets recruited by the government to investigate why a virtual online world is leaving some users brain-dead, which would seem to be a self-answering question. A special Barnes & Noble edition of The Eye of Minds will be available for Dashner to sign, so take this chance to meet him before the Maze Runner movie comes out and the lines to meet him get too long. —Zack Smith
