It's Kind of a Funny Story

Rated PG-13 101 min. 2010

The question concerning this weakly titled effort is whether the film can find its teenage audience. It's being released in art houses, but this is basically an earnest after-school special with a laudable theme: Adolescent angst is normal, and it isn't worth killing yourself over. We meet Craig (Keir Gilchrist), a depressed high school overachiever who persuades a Brooklyn hospital to admit him into the psychiatric ward where he makes two key friends: a girl named Noelle (Emma Roberts), and a middle-aged depressive named Bobby (Zach Galifianakis). This film represents an intriguing off-speed pitch from the filmmaking team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (Half Nelson and Sugar); while this new film holds less interest for adults, it's an encouraging sign that their career continues without compromise.
