Instro Summit

When: Sat., May 4, 12 p.m.-2 a.m. 2013

Word has apparently gotten out about Instro Summit, because Crispy Bess' fifth annual three-day festival of mostly wordless music features its best lineup to date. Bess has unearthed an astoundingly eclectic array of surf-inspired rock. Friday's bill is led by Alabama apocalyptic surf-punks Kill, Baby...Kill!, as well as Charlotte's stylish, longstanding surfabilly aficionados Aqualads and the high-energy, funny-car punch of The Madeira. Saturday's headliner is local band Blood Red River, who channel a slinky Link Wray "Rumble," accompanied by the clamorous surf-psych of New Yorkers The Coffin Daggers and the shadowy Texas boogie/back-alley surf of New Englanders Beware the Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion. Sunday might be the best night of all, from the Vivesectors' jazzy space-surf cover of "Another Brick in the Wall" through similarly Floyd-inspired Boston instrumentalists The Invisible Rays and the cosmic country-surf of the Weisstronauts.

Previously held at The Cave in Chapel Hill, Instro Summit moves to Durham this year and adds several free, all-ages Saturday shows before 6 p.m. At least eight bands play each of the three nights, raising the bar on instrumental rock. —Chris Parker
