Independence Bowl

When: Mon., Dec. 26, 5 p.m. 2011

SHREVEPORT, LA.—The Bowl Championship Series is a little like a medieval prom in which kids sit breathlessly around the perimeter of the castle ballroom awaiting mysterious royalty to pair them off, rather than asking each other to dance. And the schools remaining after the five BCS games are set to flick furtive glances at the lesser nobles who match them in one of the other 30 bowl games. The UNC Tar Heels' hand has been given to Missouri in the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., and it will be a well-moisturized hand, as AdvoCare is a leading supplier of skin care products (bet you didn't know that). The underdog Heels have stumbled down the stretch, losing four of their last six games after a 5-1 start, and they probably should be happy just to be appearing in a bowl game at all. The Independence Bowl will free Carolina fans from a forgettable year after enduring a spring with mounting allegations of NCAA violations that resulted in coach Butch Davis' firing over the summer. Freshman running back Giovani Bernard, at least, was a diamond in the rough this season. Whether or not you spit on the ground when Davis' name is mentioned, you won't likely shed a tear over the hopefully not aptly named interim coach, Everett Withers, as he prowls the Carolina sideline for the final time. The 5 p.m. game airs on ESPN2. —Chris Vitiello
