in what's on the horizon

Ever look back and wonder what might have been with that person you met in your youth, for a fleeting hour or two, while traveling abroad? Richard Linklater has taken that conceit and spun two marvelous films out of it. The first, Before Sunrise, was made in 1995 and it introduced us to Ethan Hawke's American and Julie Delpy's Frenchwoman, both students doing the summer backpacking thing. When they meet again in Paris nine years later in Before Sunset, Jesse is a newly successful novelist and Julie is an international relief worker. The effect of the change between the two films is mesmerizing, stoking nostalgia and regret in equal measures. The NC Museum of Art is featuring the films in back-to-back outdoor screenings this Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11. Showtime is 9 p.m. For more info, www.ncartmuseum.org.
