Musicians around the country are raising their voices in dissent in the run-up to this year's elections, and this week a talented troupe of travelers and locals are making music and jokes to raise some money.
New York avant rock band Yo La Tengo are on a fundraising jaunt for Music for America, a political nonprofit group, and they've enlisted friends in a sort of variety show benefit (the take on this show goes to Erskine Bowles, though). David Kilgour, of the New Zealand band The Clean, along with the Triangle's own Mac Macaughan of Superchunk and songwriter/producer Chris Stamey will all collaborate with the Tengo, as well as members of comedy group Midnight Pajama Jam, who created their own sardonic version of the Swift Boat campaign commercial. As Yo La Tengo describes it on their Web site, there will be "a single performance during which people will come and go from the stage, playing on each others' songs, etc. In this relatively informal setting, we will offer our thoughts on the election (and trust our comedian friends to do so as well, only more entertainingly)."
