Hey, crime story lovers, put down your Elmore Leonard and your James Ellroy and check out To Protect and to Serve: The L.A.P.D. Photo Archives (pictured) at the Duke University Museum of Art. This exhibition of crime photos offers a fascinating historical glimpse at the seamy underbelly of one of America's most glamorous cities. Weaving 77 photos of crime scenes, forensic evidence, criminals and victims together with publicity, training, and celebrity images from the archives of the Los Angeles Police Department, the exhibit blurs the boundaries between evidence, document and art. The Los Angeles Times has noted that this exhibition is remarkable for even having opened, since most of the photographs have never been seen publicly and have not been viewed since being used as evidence in courtrooms.
