Before every last member of the Southeast's literati crams into Hillsborough, you might want to enjoy the bucolic side of this Orange County town and its environs at BikeFest 2000: The Fifth Annual Rural Heritage Tour. Organized by the Carolina Tarwheels Bicycle Club, the tour begins at the Superior Courthouse in downtown Hillsborough and offers one century ride, several intermediate-length rides and a nine-mile, guided historic fun ride. Along the way, bikers can luxuriate at rest stops stocked with homemade cookies, quick breads and drinks. It's too late to preregister, but you will be able to sign up on the day of the event. An entry fee of $20 ($10 for the fun ride) will get you in on a bike; spectators enter free. Registration begins at 7 a.m. For more information, check out www.tarwheels.org or call 687-5066.
