Scott Miller and the Commonwealth released one of 2001's finest roots-rock discs, Thus Always to Tyrants, featuring a batch of well-crafted compositions that brought the former V-Roys singer-songwriter popular and critical acclaim. Miller returns to the Triangle to share the stage with esteemed songwriters-performers Buddy and Julie Miller (pictured), who've toured and/or recorded with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle. Their songs have been recorded by such Nashville heavyweights as The Dixie Chicks and Hank III. The husband and wife duo, who've always appeared on each other's recordings, finally released their first truly collaborative effort, simply titled Buddy & Julie Miller. The disc, besides eight original tunes, also features covers by the likes of Richard Thompson, Utah Phillips and Dylan. Catch this don't-miss double bill Wednesday, Jan. 9 at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. Call 967-9053 for details. --Angie Carlson
