If you're somewhere near the American Tobacco Amphitheatre on Friday, Sept. 23, you may hear some incredibly familiar sounds--melodies, rhythms and bass lines burned in your memory. But it won't be a radio blaring an oldies station, and it sure won't be some beach music cover band. No, this is the pure stuff coming from the cats that made it happen the first time out. The legendary Funk Brothers--Motown vets of the era that put the Motor City on the music map--are coming to town for a show sponsored by and in support of WNCU--N.C. Central's radio station (and one of the best places for jazz and soul on the Triangle dial). They're joined by vocalist Freda Payne. Expect to hear some Temps, Smokey and Supremes in their pure form and know that the tall dude smackin' that tambourine is the same guy who wrote that tambourine part. See a piece of history and the best band you've probably never heard of. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $55-65.
