Almost 40 years before the White Stripes, the Hives, the Forty Fives, and all those other "the" outfits, there were a whole bunch of bands garage-birthing music that was primal and raw, psychedelic and frequently psycho (cue the Sonics). Mind you, these '60s groups weren't doing this as a form of homage--you can't exactly pay tribute to something when you're still in the laboratory. Instead, they were probably just making the coolest sounds that they could think of with their instruments and fledgling abilities. As former re-issue producer for, among others, the excellent Sundazed label and the man behind the now defunct HERE 'TIS zine, Jeff Jarema lives and breathes '60s garage-punk. And from 9 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, Aug. 21, Jarema and co-host Blast-off Bob will be counting down their 50 garage-rock favorites on Chapel Hill's WXYC 89.3 as well as giving away some freebies courtesy of Sundazed. Tune in and dig in.
