in playing, dressed up

Just when you thought 2005 was finally ready to succumb to 2006 and the year has already been boosted by way-productive local bands and strong years for clubs all around, it hit you: What about THE GREAT COVER-UP? Never fear, Kings is at it again, for a seventh time, starting Thursday at 10 p.m. and straight on for four hours Friday and Saturday until last call comes knocking. It's a premiere rock 'n' roll masquerade, where local bands (or friends that sometimes turn into local bands) pay tribute to their more famous or infamous heroes: In the past, legends from Pink Floyd, X and The Flaming Lips to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Danzig and The Who have all gotten their gravy. Last year even included an '80s soft rock cover band (The Little River Band), which you can still see around town as The Wusses. As always, the lineup is kept semi-secret, so you'll have to go and hear the mystery firsthand. But remember that these bands have never been done: KISS, Faust, The Pretty Things and Cheap Trick. C'mon, who's got the gall? Proceeds benefit InterAct and the Wake County Literary Council, and tickets are $5 for each of the three nights.
