It's been a long journey for photographer Jenny Warburg from her first Brownie camera to the phone call she got this summer from senator-elect Hillary Clinton, requesting that she travel with the campaign for a week. In between, she has worked as a social worker, activist and a frequent photographic contributor to The Independent, as well as Time, Mother Jones, Rolling Stone and other prominent national magazines. Warburg sees her often-political photography (pictured) as a continuation of her social work, and in particular has spent almost 10 years informally documenting her friend and women's rights activist Gloria Steinem. Warburg's show Freelance will be up at the Durham Arts Council's Allenton Gallery through Jan. 14, with an opening reception on Thursday, Dec. 14, from 5-7:30 p.m. See for yourself her sharp and insightful portraits, a local woman's vision of our changing national culture. Call 560-2787 for details.
