in North Carolina dance

It's too good an idea for just once a year--and even better since it's free. That would be the N.C. Choreographers and Dancers showcase, Saturday, May 1 at Cary Academy's Fine Arts Center. Some names will already be familiar to those who've caught recent episodes of the North Carolina Dance Festival: Greensboro's Jan Van Dyke joins Asheville Contemporary Dance Theater, Choreo Collective and Even Exchange's Allison Waddell and Jennifer Huggins on stage.

But a bevy of underexposed artists leaven the mix: Wilmington's Harper Piver returns after a recent guest appearance with 5 Chick Posse, while Diana Turner-Forte shows us what modern dance looks like these days way down yonder in Ellerbe. Edgy Greensboro artist Barry Stoneking appears, as does the fledgling Inversions Dance Company from Chapel Hill. Host Betsy Ward-Hutchinson rounds the evening out with recent work. A good one-night primer in North Carolina dance--and you can't make it cheaper than free.
