Chucho Valdes, one of the greatest jazz musicians to hail from Cuba, will finally be performing on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at UNC after visa problems kept him from performing last fall. A pianist for most of his life, Valdes is best known for his creation and musical direction of Irakere, the most respected jazz orchestra in Cuba during the '70s. The ensemble featured Arturo Sandoval and Paquito D'Riviera, both of whom were original members. Valdes has since released numerous small group and solo albums, and his latest, Fantasia Cubana: Variations on Classical Themes, was released last year on the Blue Note label. Hill Hall, UNC Campus, Chapel Hill. Call 962-1449 for more information. Admission prices are $35 and $20. --Melissa McEvoy
