Once again the Duke Jazz Program and director Paul Jeffries host the annual N.C. International Jazz Festival, a series of concerts featuring renowned jazz players from around the world. The festival, now in its 19th year, kicks off this Friday, Feb. 1, with a concert by trumpet player Derrick Gardner, who'll be backed by the Duke Jazz Ensemble. Besides leading his own sextet (The Jazz Prophets), Gardner, a former member of The Count Basie Orchestra, is an in-demand New York sideman who's collaborated with such artists as Harry Connick Jr., Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Golson. Hear him at Baldwin Auditorium, Duke East Campus, at 8 p.m. Call 684-4444 for details. --Angie Carlson
