Ben and Karen Barker, owners of Durham's Magnolia Grill restaurant, know a little something about food. Ben Barker was named Best Chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Foundation in 2000 and Karen Barker received Bon Appetit's American Food and Entertaining Award for Best Pastry Chef in 1999. Meet the Barkers and hear about their cookbook, Not Afraid of Flavor: Recipes from Magnolia Grill (UNC Press), when they appear at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. According to Ben Barker, the wildly successful cookbook, which has already sold 30,000 copies and is now in its second printing, "really does capture our style and the seasonal cadence of our restaurant, an I'm not sure that's always true of chef-based cookbooks." Look in the back of The Independent for recipes from the cookbook during the holiday season. Call 715-0200 or go to http://ncmuseumofhistory.org for details about the Barkers' appearance.
