El Centro Latino of Carr-boro is celebrating its first anniversary this Saturday, July 28, at 7 p.m. with a community potluck in their offices, located at 101 Lloyd St., in Carrboro. That's followed by a dance party at the Cat's Cradle featuring the music of Carnavalito (pictured), with proceeds to benefit El Centro's programs. El Centro Latino, a nonprofit provider of social services to Hispanics in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Orange County, offers ESL classes, driver's license education, orientation and support for young families, child care during class times, and a women's group to empower and develop future community leaders. The organization also promotes cultural understanding by cooperating with other local nonprofit organizations and by bringing together volunteers with members of the immigrant and Latin American communities. To attend the potluck, just show up with a dish to pass at El Centro's offices at 7 p.m. At 9 p.m. the party moves across the street, where the Triangle's premiere Latin jazz band, Carnavalito, and a DJ will provide the jams. Carnavalito plays a danceable mix of salsa, merengue, cumbia, cha-cha-cha, and other Latin styles, with seven seasoned musicians on horns, piano, bass and percussion. The Cradle benefit bash will be family friendly, with children under 12 admitted free (adults pay $5). Proceeds will go to support and expand El Centro Latino programs.
