This weekend, downtown Durham will once again be transformed from its usual mausoleum-like quiet into a shoulder-jostling, hip-bumping party by the 27th annual Centerfest. Scattered down side streets you'll find more than 135 visual artists displaying their wares, which range from leather belts to hand-blown glass and custom furniture. Of the three stages and 30 performers scheduled, make sure you check out the powerful and moving singing of The Mighty Gospel Inspirations, a rare daytime appearance by Tift Merritt and the Carbines and the sounds of teen-bluegrass band Crawdad PA. There's also a children's area with lots of foamy delights from the Scrap Exchange, and several learning tents to occupy young attention spans. Volunteers are always needed to pull off this massive event, which runs on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 17, from noon until 6 p.m. Call 560-2723 for details.
