The Haw River is very old, rambling and beautiful. But for the better part of the 20th century, it was treated like a private sewer by Piedmont textile plants. One of those mills--long closed and recently burned down--was in Bynum, the hometown of the Haw River Assembly. On Saturday, May 8, the assembly is sponsoring the Haw River Community Festival with plenty of music, food, puppets, storytelling and other kid-friendly activities. Acts include Jonathan Byrd, Big Fat Gap, Paperhand Puppet Intervention Theater and The Never.

You can also learn a little about river monitoring at Bynum Beach and commune with some of Clyde's critters. www.hawriver.org
