Don't think Durham is exactly a hotbed of worldly flavor? Here's proof to the contrary: on Friday night, Durham's Community and Family Life Center at Lyon Park Recreation Center plays host to the African Cultural Exchange and Jam, a pulse-pounding epicenter of the area's African performance artists. Organized by energized local groups Percussion Ah Saleem and Artistic Visions of Ache, the event welcomes any and all musicians and dancers to share their love of African art with informal dance, drum and song presentations. For those less willing or able to perform, you can still just enjoy the show and soak up the atmosphere, which includes refreshments and vendors (table space is still available, call 660-3304). It promises to be a lively evening and an infectious party--plus an entertaining lesson for all you isolationists. Admission is $10 for the general public, $20 for non-professional drummers looking to join in. Doors are at 7, and if you'd like to get a performance slot, call 660-3304.
