This weekend, Kings in Raleigh sponsors its Second Annual Great Cover Up, with proceeds going to local charities. The Friday-through-Sunday night event, Dec. 1-3, features tons of local and not-so-local faves--Mayflies USA, Daddy, Cherry Valence, Ashley Stove, Rodeo Boy and even the Connells' Doug MacMillan--as they become one of their fave bands/artists for the evening. The fun is figuring out who each group is supposed to be and watching these "alternative" acts rockin' the house as cover bands. Last year's highlights included Cherry Valence as DEVO--flower pot hats and all--and the Mercury Birds "whipping the crowd into a tambourine-induced frenzy" as '70s jammers the James Gang, according to Kings' Ben Barwick. As the Violent Femmes, Goner took the "sounds just exactly like" award. Barwick's keeping mum on who his band, Ashley Stove, is becoming for their set, but he will say that normally reserved bassist Jennifer Walker will be taking over as stick singer. This is probably the most fun you can have in a club without getting tossed out. Doors open at 8 p.m.; bands start at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. on Sunday. Call for line-ups and times: 831-1005. --Angie Carlson
