In blues

Cyril Lance was lying around on the beach in Honolulu playing slack-key guitar when Muddy Waters reached through the radio and stole his soul. Lance threw away his flip-flops and moved to Boston in pursuit of the blues. Eventually landing in Chapel Hill, he toured with Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos, stirring up a funky stew composed of Zydeco and blues. Using the same rhythm section of Chris Carroll on bass and Kelly Pace on drums, Lance recorded Stranger In My House, a mix of Latin, Zydeco, funk, gospel, rock and blues. With the addition of late '80s era ex-Allman brother Johnny Neel, who adds a chunk of churchy B-3 and a come-to-Jesus Southern rock vocal flavor to several cuts, it's a slam-bang, blues drenched howler of a record. The same guys will be howling live as well, along with special guests local blues hounds Big Mama E and the Cool at the Cat's Cradle Friday, Dec. 13. Call 967-9053. --Grant Britt
