Triangle Blues Society's 2001 Talent contest winners Mighty Lester and the Blues Kings recently underwent a reshuffling that cost them their chief vocalist/ drummer. But the band has regrouped and is now back on track with gospel-trained and R&B honed vocalist Todd Dewberry fronting the group. Guitarist Lenny Tirenzi and Oceola studios owner and bassist Dennis MdGill choose the material, which ranges from the '50s to the mid-'70s and includes jump blues and classic Stax R&B eras. Tirenzi says the group looks for songs that are off the beaten path. Artists like Wynonie Harris and T- Bone Walker share the Lester spotlight along with Sam and Dave. The eight-piece ensemble packs a mighty punch with a beefy horn section featuring former Gatemouth Brown bari and tenor sax man Joe Sunseri. The band lives by their motto: Swing, jump, jive and wail, to the gratitude of local dancers who come out to do all of the above. --Grant Britt
