Roots on Ninth: A Celebration of Musical Tradition is a free event sponsored by WNCU (N.C. Central University's radio station) and the Music Maker Relief Foundation (MMRF). Showcasing traditional blues music of the Carolinas and West Virginia, the fest will feature three stages of music by MMRF artists, including performances by Durham Piedmont blues guitarist John Dee Holman, along with Captain Luke (pictured above) and Cool John Ferguson, Lightnin' Wells, Abe Reid, Cootie Stark and more. According to the MMRF head Tim Duffy, the event will be the largest gathering of Carolina blues artists ever assembled. The free celebration takes place this Sunday, May 5, from 1-6 p.m. on Ninth Street in Durham. On Saturday, May 4, at 9 p.m., there'll be a pre-Roots party featuring Cool John Ferguson and Friends at the All People's Grill in Durham. For details on either event, call the MMRF at 643-2456.
