Get your blues on and support local activism at the N.C. WARN Benefit this Friday featuring Scott Ainslie, Jon Shain Trio, the Tony Williamson Band and Armand and Bluesology. The benefit was initiated by Shain to assist the group in their effort to cover the legal costs of six N.C. WARN supporters arrested for nonviolent civil disobedience at CP&L's Raleigh headquarters in March 2001. The six were there to demand that CP&L agree to public hearings on their plan to open two new storage pools for "spent" fuel rods--which qualify as high-level nuclear waste--at the Shearon Harris plant. "This expansion will make Harris the largest high-level nuclear storage facility in the United States," says N.C. WARN spokesperson Lyn Gould. Shain approached the bands--which are donating their time and talent--and Cat's Cradle owner Frank Heath donated the use of his club. Other locals helping the cause are Doug Carlton of Truckin' Movers and The Poster Guys in Chapel Hill. "It truly is a benefit with no expense to us," says Gould. Head to the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill this Friday, May 24. Call 967-9053 for details. --Angie Carlson
