In benefits

If there's one thing we've learned at The Independent, it's that when you've hit hard times, it really pays to have musician friends. This week, The Stillhouse Bottom Band--composed of AC Bushnell, Bobb Head, Alan Julich and Mark Weems--reinforces that observation when they play a concert at the Unity Center of Peace Church in Chapel Hill to benefit their pal David Bass, who's living at Duke Hospital while awaiting a donor for a heart transplant. If his name sounds familiar, it's because Bass was the fiddler in a nationally known old-time band, The Freighthoppers. The concert takes place on Friday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m. The suggested donation is $10. Call 968-1854 or 563-9148 for details.
