I Am Durham

When: Mon., April 19, 2-5 p.m. 2010

The campaign to keep public-access TV alive in Durham takes to the streets this afternoon downtown at CCB Plaza. A crew will film Durham residents and business owners—anyone who wants to talk about what makes Durham special—for segments that public-access advocates will use to help persuade the powers-that-be that Channel 18 is crucial for the community.

Durham Community Media's contract with the city expires in June. While public-access TV may seem outdated in light of YouTube and Vimeo, keep in mind that it remains an important social justice outlet, particularly for youth. In addition, Durham Community Media and the Peoples Channel also train interested residents on video shooting and editing at their East Geer Street facility.

The filming will run from 2–5 p.m. CCB Plaza is on Corcoran between Parrish and Chapel Hill streets, near the bull statue. —Lisa Sorg
