Hugh Laurie

When: Fri., Nov. 1, 8 p.m. 2013

For eight seasons, actor Hugh Laurie—already renowned in England for his role in Blackadder and several other British series—played the brilliant and half-mad New Jersey doctor Gregory House. He ranted, joked and diagnosed in a gruff American accent. And occasionally, after a rough day at the hospital, he'd sit behind a piano or stand behind a Gibson six-string to sing a bit of stateside blues. Though he's long been a woodshedding musician and enthusiastic listener (as evidenced by his deep knowledge of jazz and R&B), Laurie funneled those moments into a House sideline as the frontman of his own band. His performances are competent if not remarkable, though his choice of backing bands is generally wonderful. A humorist, actor and writer, Laurie's a good showman, too, with an acerbic wit not far removed from his cane-brandishing television character. . —Grayson Haver Currin
