Housing for New Hope’s mission is to prevent and end homelessness by providing increased access to healthcare, integrated services, and housing.

150 households were threatened with homelessness this holiday season when Lincoln Apartments in Durham announced they were closing their doors. Housing for New Hope (HNH) is working with about 50 households remaining to find and secure alternative housing before Dec. 31. One evicted family is Ms. Green, a retired senior citizen, and her 13-year-old grandson, of whom she has legal custody. Ms. Green and her grandson moved to Lincoln Apartments in June 2012. They live on a fixed income due to injuries Ms. Green sustained from her work. To make ends meet, she provides child care for another grandchild and makes jewelry. Since Ms. Green had used all of her saved funds moving to Lincoln this past summer, she was not prepared to afford another move so soon. Ms. Green is deeply appreciative for the help relocating her family’s belongings to their new home last Friday (Dec. 7) and for the start-up housing assistance. As she and her grandson were moving into their lovely, two-bedroom house, she thanked the volunteers with tears in her eyes, saying, “Thank you for getting me out of that jail,” referring to her old apartment. The rent maybe a bit more but it is worth it to this family.
