Hot Releases presents Scraping Teeth, Holly Hunt, Clang Quartet, Secret Boyfriend, Yohimbe

When: Tue., April 24, 9:30 p.m. 2012

Trumpeting "marginal musics and peripheral visions," the Carrboro record label Hot Releases has established itself as one of the Triangle's most vital stewards of outsider music. At the helm is Ryan Martin, a prodigious house-show host and performer whose Secret Boyfriend project has grown startlingly ample, running the gamut from harsh noise to acoustic singer-songwriter to zoned-out dance music, all delivered with an unnervingly vacant intensity. Whether screaming through a contact-miked tinfoil mask or massaging together ailing drum machines and synthesizers, Martin will anchor this showcase, which features a lively mix of Hot Releases signees, affiliates and touring pals. Raleigh's Yohimbe has a live set that resembles a pair of DJs going suddenly, violently insane. Local noise legend Clang Quartet, using broken cymbals and elaborate props, suggests Jesus Christ Superstar as interpreted by Merzbow. Metal grinders Holly Hunt and art-rock bruisers Scraping Teeth, currently sharing "The Worst Band in America Tour 2012," round out a bill that makes its own center out of sundry fringes. —Brian Howe
