Where to see what this month


It's pouring out of every speaker in the mall (along with those subliminal messages telling you to buy sweaters with sparkles and bears on them). But if you'd rather see some holiday music live, there are a lot of options on the horizon.

In addition to Clay pushing his new Christmas album at Meymandi Hall (Dec. 9-10), one check of our concert listings and you'll see that there is no shortage of venues offering holiday music--from sappy to jazzy to fully orchestrated messianic heralding. Here's a snapshot of the shows coming up:

Friday, Dec. 3
Christmas at the Corner: Friday & Saturday, Dec. 3 & 4, 7 p.m.: Dinner and concert. University Baptist Church, corner of Franklin and Columbia streets, Chapel Hill. 942-2157, $10, $5 ages 12 & under, $75/table (seats 8).

Saturday, Dec. 4
Jimmy Magoo & Friends: 11 a.m.: Music for the kid in you, featuring original songs and holiday favorites, with a surprise cast of local musicians. Deep Dish Theater Company, University Mall, Estes Drive and US 15-501, Chapel Hill. 968-1515. $5.

Sunday, Dec. 5
Meredith Christmas Concert: 3 & 8 p.m. Jones Auditorium, Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. 760-8536. Free.

Monday, Dec. 6
Peace College Choir & Chamber Singers: Monday & Wednesday, Dec. 6 & 8, 7 p.m.: Annual holiday concert featuring an 18-piece orchestra playing familiar holiday carols plus Carols & Lullabies--Christmas in the Southwest by Conrad Susa (10 Spanish songs accompanied by harp, guitar and marimba). Thursday, Dec. 9
A Holiday Performance of Christmas Music Classics: 6:15 p.m.: Featuring Natalie Peacock, mezzo soprano. Chapel Hill Senior Center at the Galleria, 400 S. Elliot Road. 968-2070. Free.

Friday, Dec. 10
Joyful Voices of Youth: 7 p.m.: Christmas musical featuring choirs from nine local churches to benefit children in foster care and child welfare families. Body of Christ Church, 4501 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh. 212-7794. Donations, unwrapped toys and gift certificates accepted.

N.C. Jazz Repertory Orchestra: 8 p.m.: Featuring Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's epic jazz arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, plus holiday favorites. Hill Hall Auditorium, UNC-Chapel Hill Campus. 962-1449. $12, $10 seniors, $5 students.

Saturday, Dec. 11
Capital City Girls Choir Holiday Concert: 7:30 p.m.: Jones Auditorium, Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. 760-8536. Free.

Choral Society of Durham: Saturday, Dec. 11, 8 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 12, 4 p.m.: Sound the Trumpet! Christmas Music for Choir & Brass, featuring Donald McCullough's Canite tuba, various works from the Renaissance to the 21st century, and a cappella arrangements of favorite carols. NC Master Chorale: 8 p.m.: Joy of the Season features works written or arranged by N.C. composers as well as music indigenous to N.C.; with the 22-voice NCMC Chamber Choir.
